Meet the Team
Claire Monk, Head Brewer
As well as being one of the country's youngest Head Brewers, Claire is also one of
the few female ones – and yet her career all came about by chance. Having studied
microbiology and bio-chemistry at Sheffield University, she was unsure about which
career path to follow when a lecturer friend suggested the food and drinks industry.
She soon found herself at Kelham Island Brewery in Sheffield training as a brewer.
It was the ideal role, made even more appealing by the fact that she’d always had a
passion for beer encouraged by her father’s love of real ale. When Welbeck Brewery
opened in April 2010, Claire moved to become Head Brewer. It was a dream come
true job and she is now relishing the routine of brewing and managing the brewery's
day-to-day business. “It’s very demanding, but great fun”, she says. “Brewing is a
scientific process which is where my degree comes in. You have to consider what you
want the ABV to be and work out how much sugar is needed for the yeast to ferment
into alcohol, as well as deciding on what style you want. It’s a bit like following a
cooking recipe, although the flavour can vary depending on the water used and how
the hops affect aroma and bitterness.”
James Gladman, Brewer
James is a local lad from Carburton. He grew up around Welbeck and knows the area
very well – particularly the pubs and those that serve good beer. He decided to
go one step further and applied for the vacant assistant brewer's job at Welbeck to
learn the art of brewing. The knowledge which Claire has learnt over her brewing
career is now being passed down to James and we are sure that because of his
willingness to take everything on board she says he'll soon be brewing a range of his
own 'unique' recipes – as well as running the brewery!
Stuart Basford, Sales
Stuart is 'the man' for selling our beer directly to our customers. He has many years in
the brewery and drinks industry, having previously worked for Kelham Island Brewery and
Libra Drinks after retiring from the South Yorkshire Police Force. In his spare time,
Stuart is a long suffering Sheffield Wednesday supporter and a promoter of country,
folk and blues music throughout venues in Sheffield.
Helen Baxter, Accountant
Helen is our accountant, helping to keep us on the straight and narrow, whilst looking
after our 250 pub customers. Helen and Stuart have had a number of heated debates whilst
working together, all over football because Helen is a die-hard Sheffield United fan!
Before starting with us, Helen and her husband weren’t real ale fans, however they now thoroughly
enjoy visiting local pubs together.
Glenn Walker, Logistics
Glenn is our logistics expert with many years of hands-on experience, which is perfect
for our growing business. As a passionate real ale fan, Glenn is committed to
supporting his trade customers at all times and getting quality beer to them in the
fastest and most efficient way possible. His equally beer-mad wife shares his passion
too. He and Vicki can often be found in one of our favourite pubs, The Strugglers in
Lincoln. Pop-in and share a pint with them next time you're passing.
Joe Allison, Delivery Driver
Joe is the newest member to join the brewery team. Travelling each day from his
Sheffield home, he is big fan of real ales and lives a stone's throw from the famous
Broadfield Ale House on Abbeydale Road. Joe's primary role is helping deliver our beers
to local pubs, but he is also learning our brewery craft. Joe has a real passion for
food too; recently he has taught himself how to make charcuterie and has built a
wood-fired clay pizza oven in his back garden!
